Problem #1: Need for Repair

It doesn’t take long for a road case to collect a few scrapes. But when the damage gets serious, you’ll start running into a lot of issues.

The most common types of damage we see are broken latches and broken casters. Problems like these may not seem like a big deal, but they can mean the difference between a successful event and a disastrous one. They slow you down and reduce functionality.

Road case damage is more than an inconvenience. Not only does it put your equipment at greater risk of damage (or theft!), it also poses a safety hazard. Broken latches can snag clothing, wires, and even people. Broken casters can cause accidents during load-in and load-out.

Problem #2: Retrofitting Old Cases

It’s great when your road cases outlast your equipment — that is, until your upgraded assets no longer fit inside them.

A lot of our clients attempt to retrofit their cases for new equipment. This is a great way to maximize the value of an older case when you can make it work. Other times, it becomes a square-peg-round-hole situation.

The biggest problem with retrofitting older cases is ensuring your assets have adequate protection. While we try to work with our clients in these scenarios, the case configuration doesn’t always allow enough space or foam to keep sensitive equipment safe and stable.

More often than not, the solution is a new case. But don’t worry — you can still get more use out of your old case. Simply demote it to storing less sensitive equipment or repurpose it into something new. It could make a great side table!

Problem #3: Size and Weight Issues

Size and weight are easy to overlook. Safety is our first priority, and a case may end up larger than expected once it’s properly foamed out. Weight can also sneak up on you, especially when a case carries multiple items.

If your case has a size or weight issue, maneuverability plummets. Moving quickly and efficiently can be difficult if your case doesn’t fit through the venue door. In tightly scheduled industries like music and touring, even a few seconds lost to an ungainly case can cause significant delays.

The key to avoiding this problem is communication with your case designers. If a case we’re building ends up larger than originally anticipated, we communicate this with our clients as early in the design process as possible.

This usually isn’t as big a problem for the larger companies we work with. They operate in big, open spaces with powerful forklifts and few size constraints.

But clients that don’t move items as regularly have to carefully consider maneuverability. Before the build begins, you may want to find out weight limits on lifts and dollies as well as take measurements of door widths and tight corners.
